IDEALS Tools Development
IDEALS tools (assessments and instructional materials) have been created and tested by a diverse team of engineering design and assessment experts for utilization in either disciplinary or multidisciplinary design project contexts. more...IDEALS tools address learning outcomes derived from the profile of successful engineers, based on input from 100 engineering professionals and engineering design faculty members. Sixteen separate assessments have been created. Some have been implemented with hundreds of students in engineering, business, and other disciplines at over a dozen institutions. Assessments and instructional materials are organized into modules that are available online to approved design instructors.
IDEALS Online Assessments
IDEALS assessments are available online for areas that include: teamwork, professional development (lifelong learning), professional responsibility (and ethics), design processes, and solution assets (stages of design solutions). more...For each area, one or more formative assessments provide questions that probe students' (individuals' or teams') understanding, facilitate discussion, aid in developing a framework for learning, and challenge learning and progress. Instructor feedback (and occasionally, peer feedback) provides personalized review of progress and comments to guide future performance. A summative assessment is available for each performance area to test students' understandings and give evidence of performances at critical project milestones. Student responses are scored online by the instructor.
IDEALS Instructional Materials
IDEALS instructional materials support professional areas that include: teamwork, professional development (lifelong learning), and professional responsibility (and ethics). more...An instructor's guide gives background for the topic, offers suggested pre-class and in-class assignments, provides suggestions for facilitation of the materials, refers to readings or worksheets needed for the assignments, and explains use of the corresponding assessment. Instructor guides and associated resources are organized with corresponding assessments into an IDEALS module. Each file of a module is available for download by approved instructors.

IDEALS resources and predecessor design education materials have been developed with support from the National Science Foundation under grants DUE 9455158, 9973034, 0003291, 0404924, 0717561, and 0919248.
